1953年，袁隆平领取了人生的第一笔工资，42元。他回忆说，“那次我在长沙呆了两天，先去了橘子洲游泳，第二天去商店里买了把小提琴，花了27元。”

用人生的第一笔工资买一把小提琴，是袁隆平在大学时的梦想。

他的工作地点几乎都是田间地头，而且时常满身泥土，在制种育种阶段，工作不分白天黑夜，拉琴是他调整身心的方式。

袁隆平曾提及在安江农校附近拉琴的感受：夜晚时分，月光满地，蛙声不绝，琴声能消除一天的疲劳。

有一次，他出席一个全国性大会。会议前有人提议他拉琴。他拉起了科学家李四光的作品《行路难》。

在他八岁时，冒着抗日战争的狼烟，他们全家逃难到湖南桃江县。在逃难的船上，他被人不慎推下水，幸亏艄公把他救上船，保住性命。从此他就下定决心学游泳。

接着，他全家逃难到重庆。上学后，到了夏天，长江的龙门浩成了他和同学们戏水的天堂。尽管挨过父亲的打骂，但在龙门浩他如鱼得水，从学狗爬式、蛙式入门，再按体育老师的引导，一步步苦练，终于成了同学们中自由泳的好手，最终冲出龙门浩，横渡长江。

1960年，袁隆平还是湖南省安江农校的一名普通教师。从这年夏天开始，长达3年的大饥荒和天灾人祸横卷中国，即便是农学出身、既拿着国家工资又守着农业试验田的袁隆平一样吃不饱肚子。

饥饿让他对粮食匮乏有了亲身体会，对学养深厚的袁隆平来说，在饥饿中的思考比普通人更加深入：粮食缺乏，必须想办法增加产出。有一天，房东冒雨挑着一担稻谷回来，他告诉袁隆平，这是他从另一个村子换来的稻种。
